Amalgamating the knowledge, experience, and ambition of producers Nestor Lasso, Adrian Lasso, and Jhoan Vegara - Nestor Lasso by El Diviso is a true exemplar of Colombian speciality coffee; a naturally processed Sidra with tasting notes of Pomegranate, Grapefruit, Marshmallow and Dark Chocolate.

Five years ago, Nestor Lasso and his brother Adrian took over their family coffee farm with a focus on developing speciality coffee experimentations and fermentations. Today, at ages 22 and 24, the brothers have teamed up with Jhoan Vegara, merged the two family farms, and worked to transform post-harvest methods within their farm in Pitalito, Huila – this coffee is the product of a transformed El Diviso.

Combined with the work of Cat and Pierre of CATA Export, El Diviso has grown to become a farm renowned for its status as a speciality coffee producer on the international stage; microlots from this farm are used countlessly in European barista competitions – most recently winning First place at Brewers Cup Ireland, and Third place in the same event in Austria.

Nestor Lasso

Nestled in Pitalito, Huila, El Diviso is a 14 ½ Hectare farm sitting at an altitude of 1750MSL. For producer Nestor Lasso, this coffee producing region has always been home. A childhood spent amongst nature, living off the fruit and vegetable harvests from the farm inspired the decision to stay in the coffee producing industry rather than seek out an office-based career.

‘Beyond what specialty coffee brings economically, I have always had a passion for production. When I realised that specialty coffee offered a real possibility of economic development, and that in addition I could develop my knowledge of coffee production, and in particular the processes, I really got into it.’

Both Nestor and Adrian developed their skill by attending SENA – a programme funded by the Colombian State, recognised as the best growing school in Latin America. Theoretical bases, the science of coffee processing, and the importance of cupping were all taught to the brothers here. But as argued by Nestor, the reality of the job is learned in the field.

‘What really makes the difference is the passion that the producer can have for the coffee. If you're not naturally passionate, you'll never get the trick! Often, some coffee growers here have a lot of money because they have a lot of land and the best machines possible. But specialty coffee does not interest them, they do not see the point of changing because they are not as passionate about coffee as we are. I have seen that specialty coffee consumption has changed a lot in recent years in the country. Until recently, Colombians only drank coffee by-products, anything that could not be exported. But people here have realised that coffee is a much more noble product than it seems. Many producers today keep part of their harvest to roast it themselves and drink it at home. All the specialty coffee craze has really brought about a different way of looking at coffee.’

Imported By

CATA

A true testament to the importance of the relationship between producer and importer, Cata Export have worked alongside El Diviso to nourish and grow the passion and talent of Nestor, Adrian and Jhoan. Offering new skills and understanding to these producers came with large financial investment and a real devotion of time, but its impact has been undeniable – the proof lies in the scope of how many coffees from this farm have now featured on the international competition stage.

Cata Export and Finca El Diviso work as a team. Working directly from the farm truly enriches the offering that Cata Export can give international buyers – both on a practical level with discussions of agronomy, all the way to the personal benefit of extending relationships between farmer and buyer.

Ultimately, this hands-on approach from Cata has translated to vast economic benefits for the farms they work with. This means that many more young producers like Nestor have stayed in coffee and built a career from it.

Outstanding

I bought this Nesto Lasso at the Brighton Coffee Festival along with about 7 or 8 other coffees. I then tried a number of filter techniques including a Costa Rican Vandola, V60, Chemex and this coffee was outstanding with all methods. Had to re-order and hope it remains available. Beautiful coffee and sourced in the way coffee should be. Highly recommend
