Sierra Mazateca

Nestled in the heart of Oaxaca, the Mazateca region boasts rich biodiversity and a vibrant indigenous culture. Home to the Mazatec people, also known as "Ha Shuta Enima" in their native Mazateco language, this land is steeped in tradition and history.

Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Madre Sur and Sierra Oriental mountains, the Mazateca region is characterized by lush mesophile forests, frequent rainfall, and misty valleys. Despite its natural beauty, the region faces challenges such as poverty and limited access to healthcare and education.

Despite these challenges, the Mazateca is renowned for its coffee production. The rugged terrain and high altitudes contribute to the exceptional quality of the coffee beans. Many producers in the region cultivate small plots of land, with the average farm size ranging from 0.5 to 5 hectares.

Although the region's remoteness presents logistical hurdles, its coffees are prized for their complexity and quality. However, many producers face barriers such as language barriers and lack of access to specialty markets.

Partnering with organizations like Red Beetle, we are committed to supporting Mazateca coffee producers. By connecting them with the specialty market and establishing a sustainable supply chain, we aim to create opportunities for long-term growth and prosperity.

Through these efforts, we hope to not only preserve the cultural heritage of the Mazatec people but also empower them to thrive in the global coffee industry. Together, we can unlock the full potential of Mazateca coffee and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

Raw Material

Raw Material, a passionate non-profit organization, was born from a deep-seated commitment to transforming specialty coffee into a force for positive change in our industry. They're driven by the belief that coffee should be a solution, not a contributor to the cycle of debt and disadvantage faced by generations of producers. Their dedicated team operates as service providers, standing alongside marginalised coffee-producing communities, making them a promise: to enhance their income, elevate coffee quality, boost yields, and catalyze community initiatives.

They venture deep into the heart of coffee-producing communities across five remarkable countries of origin: Burundi, Rwanda, Mexico, Colombia, and Timor Leste. Their mission is to seek out communities with whom they can collaborate to construct systems that yield top-tier coffee connected to a more stable marketplace. This pursuit is fueled by unwavering commitment to creating meaningful impact, shaping their strategy around the potential to uplift the people, places, and systems within the coffee supply chain.

Raw Material measure impact across three critical dimensions: economic, social, and environmental. The model is founded on empowering individuals within the coffee industry, offering economic freedom through fair pricing, income diversification, and prompt payments. Socially, the aim is to foster the sharing of knowledge throughout the supply chain. Environmentally, they champion responsible practices in coffee cultivation and harvesting. They meticulously gauge the outcomes at both the individual household and community levels, adjusting their approach to continually learn and grow, ensuring their impact reverberates ever more powerfully.
