How we enjoy this brew
Out on a hike, mid weekend-bike ride pit stop, at the campsite or at the hotel – this brew method is perfect for using out and about whilst away from home.
Notes
We are advocates for using what's known as the 'inverted method' when using the Aeropress. This basically means that you turn your Aeropress upside-down and brew the coffee without its filter cap on. In the final stage of the recipe, you place the filter cap back on and turn the Aeropress back to its upright position. Don't worry, we have a whole video showing you this available with the QR code on this page. We prefer the inverted method because it maximises the amount of coffee being immersed in water for as long as possible - extracting the most out of your brew.
Pick a serving jug to plunge into which is a similar perimeter to your Aeropress. You are going to need the Aeropress to be able to sit firmly in place around the rim of the jug whilst you plunge the coffee in the final step.
Steps
- Place the plunger fully into your Aeropress, then pull it back until the rubber base of the plunger sits halfway before the '4' written on the external chamber and the end of the chamber.
- Invert your aeropress in this position, so that the filter cap is facing upwards, and the plunger is acting as the base stand. Place the brewer onto your scales
- Remove the filter cap, place a filter paper inside of it and leave it to one side for now.
- Zero your scales, add 11.5g of coffee, and then zero them again. It's time to brew
- Start the timer and add 200ml of hot water to the main chamber. Now, you wait.
- At 1m45s, place the filter cap (with filter paper inside) back onto your aeropress, and carefully turn the whole aeropress back to the upright position over your serving jug.
- At 2 minutes, begin the plunging process - it should take approximately 30 seconds for the plunger to reach the bottom, at which point all coffee will be extracted.
- By pulling the plunger back upwards 1 or 2 cm after you finish brewing, you prevent any drips from falling as you transport your Aeropress to be washed up.
